Results of an ICM poll published in the Times suggested that one in five Britons cannot open a word processing document or use email.

Director for adults and lifelong learning at the Learning and Skills Council, Jon Gamble, notes that the pressure is on sales recruitment candidates to get up-to-date with information and communications technologies (ICT).

He said: "More than 80 per cent of jobs now require ICT skills.

Mr Gamble added that many sales recruitment opportunities could be missed by the those lacking basic ICT skills "because many employment opportunities are only available via the web".

The ICM poll also found that 16 per cent of employees, such as those in sales jobs, don't know how to use a search engine.
