Specific skills 'improve job search'

Job candidates should make an effort to ensure they stand out from the crowd in the difficult employment climate, it has been claimed.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that jobseekers should aim to cover as much of their expertise as possible when pursuing a position.

"Whatever it happens to be, whether it's niche sector experience that you think isn't important, whether it's a language skill that you've buried at the back of your CV, put individual skills [in your CV]," he added.

Mr Huxham went on to say that in the current market recruiters are particularly looking for the skills that make a candidate different and the extra qualities that they can bring to a role.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics indicated the unemployment rate was 6.5 per cent for the three months to January 2009, an increase of 0.5 per cent on the previous quarter and up 1.3 over the year.
