Support service simplification 'could help UK firms'

By John Oak

The number of sales vacancies could increase due to the government's simplification of the support services companies can access.

Changes announced by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform could make it easier for firms to receive funds during the downturn, potentially leading to more jobs remaining available.

Russel Griggs, chairman of the Confederation of British Industry's (CBI's) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) council, has welcomed the decision, claiming it will especially help these organisations.

He states that the CBI has been heavily involved in the programme, which could enable companies to access all of the help currently available from a large number of schemes.

Mr Griggs comments: "Improvements in the business support framework are particularly welcome in the current economic circumstances. Government must now ensure that its business services are not only simple, but also effective."

In a statement on the decision, minister for business Ian Pearson asserted that the support is necessary to provide ongoing help to businesses, potentially leading to the creation of job opportunities.
