Panel encourages professions to accept all social groups
Cabinet member Alan Milburn has challenged the top professions to open their doors to candidates regardless of their social background.
Mr Milburn, who leads the Access to Professions Panel, stated that access to the to jobs in society is becoming more socially exclusive.
The panel released figures indicating that in north-east England only one-third of the workforce are in professional or managerial jobs while in London this figure is over half of those in employment.
Mr Miburn added: "These new figures show that more needs to be done to make sure that young people in every part of the country who have the aptitude and ability to do so get the chance to pursue a professional career."
He went on to comment that evidence received by the panel suggests professions are in fact working to find talented people and develop them within their companies.
Last week, The Recruitment Society stated that a lack of confidence in the current economic climate is keeping employees in jobs when they would usually be considering a move at this time of year.
