Testing 'can put sales jobs holders off applying for promotion'
Those in sales jobs can be put off applying for promotions if these are to be decided by standardised tests, new research shows.
A study performed by the Rotman School of Management has found that while these are a common means of evaluation they can put off a potential best candidate.
Published in Personnel Psychology, the survey finds that tests can discourage applications and create anxiety.
Julie McCarthy, co-author and organisational behaviour professor, claims that the promotion process must be examined from the perspective of the candidates, who could be in sales jobs.
She states: "[Companies] need to ensure that the process they are using is fair and that people are going to have positive reactions to the process, even if they do not receive a promotion."
Recent research by Communication Downloads has found that those applying for sales jobs vacancies often lack the interview room skills that can enable them to earn the position.
