Candidates 'should stand out'

Job candidates should focus on developing a brand and maintaining a competitive edge when they pursue applications, it has been claimed.

Recruitment advice website changinggear.net states that honing a public image, working on 'softer skills' and even testing a handshake can all go some way to helping candidates stand out from the crowd.

Founder of the group Tessa Hood commented that people who learn to think of themselves as a brand are generally more self-aware than those who do not.

She added: "And it's self-awareness, coupled with a congruent personal brand image as well as the ability to do the job, that is helping people around the world to get, keep and scale the career ladder."

Earlier this week, journalist James Charles wrote for the Times that personal statements should be placed near the top of CVs to attract the attention of potential employers, should be short and to the point, and tailored to job vacancies.
