Second languages can boost job prospects
People looking for employment could benefit from being able to speak a second language, according to one expert.
Teresa Tinsley, director of communications at CILT, the National Centre for Languages, said that jobseekers looking for employment, such as sales jobs, could greatly improve their chances simply by being able to hold a conversation in a foreign tongue over dinner or drinks.
She said: "Employers are increasingly looking for people with ability in a second language, particularly conversational language skills which help to build relationships with existing partners and to make contacts in new markets."
The comments come after it was revealed that 74 per cent of employers want this form of familiarity rather than fluency, according to the CBI/Nord Anglia education and skills survey 2009.
European languages such as French and German are currently the most sought-after skills but the report showed that more companies are now looking for employees who can speak the tongues of emerging economies such as China and Russia.
